The benefits of using P4C

May 20, 2015 in Communities, Education

P4C (Philosophy for Children and Community Groups) is a style of facilitation we like to use a lot at LWC, as it encourages students to think critically in a group discussion and debate. In P4C the teacher facilitates a student-led discussion on a philosophical question. P4C builds higher order thinking, questioning, speaking and listening skills. It creates respect for others, promotes engagement with learning and enhances educational development.

It seems that Ofsted are starting to recognise this too! Dore primary school in Sheffield received an Outsanding rating from Ofsted in a recent inspection, which specifically cited

‘Lessons in philosophy encourage discussion and debate which prepare pupils well for life in Britain today’

We wish to send our congratulations to all involved and urge them to keep up the good work! To find out more about P4C click here. Dore primary school’s Ofsted report is listed below.
