New DfE Guidance on British Values

December 9, 2014 in British Values, Education

Following the general confusion from schools regarding how exactly they were supposed to promote ‘fundamental British Values’, as well as the fact that several schools have been downgraded by Ofsted specifically for failing in this area, the Department of Education issued new guidance for schools last month on teaching British Values.

The guidance repeats that schools have a duty to promote the five values previously listed by Ofsted. Interestingly, it emphasises that pupils must understand the importance of democracy in Britain and that they should be able to tell the difference between civil and religious law.
